Tequila - Brazil

At least five workers were killed and two others were injured as a result of an explosion and fire that broke out inside a tequila factory on Tuesday in the state of Jalisco, Mexico, local authorities said, Reuters reports.

The Civil Protection Agency announced on the X social network that five people were confirmed dead and two were injured, one of them in serious condition.

All of the dead and injured worked at the plant, the agency said.

Emergency services evacuated the surrounding area as a precaution, but officials said residents were allowed to return home late Tuesday.

Víctor Hugo Roldán, director of the Civil Protection agency, said two of the 219-liter tanks of tequila exploded and that authorities were making sure the alcohol did not enter the municipal drainage network.

He said that experts are investigating to find the cause of the explosion. The official said the fire was under control by evening, but emergency crews were still working at the scene.
