Fire in a building in China, 15 dead and over 40 injured

Fifteen people have died and more than 40 others have been injured after a fire broke out in an apartment building in eastern China, local authorities said.

Footage shared on social media showed flames and black smoke engulfing several floors of a building in the city of Nanjing, the BBC reported.

Officials said the fire started on the first floor of the building, where electric bicycles were being stored. But the specific cause of the fire remained under investigation.

The building is located in the Yuhuatai District of Nanjing, a city of more than eight million people that lies about 260 km northwest of Shanghai.

25 fire engines and 130 firefighters were dispatched to extinguish the flames.

Of the 44 injured people sent to the hospital for treatment, one is in critical condition and another is seriously injured, officials have stated.

At a press conference, Nanjing Mayor Chen Zhichang expressed his condolences and apologies to the families of the victims.
