Gold mine collapses in Venezuela, 14 dead

The collapse of an illegally opened gold mine in central Venezuela has killed at least 14 people and injured several others, state authorities said Wednesday, as other officials reported that a number an unspecified number of people may have been trapped.

The governor of Bolivar state, Angel Marcano, told reporters that 14 bodies had been removed so far and that at least 11 people were known to be injured, the AP reported.

"We continue to carry out the rescue work", he said, while the relatives asked for quick rescue efforts.

The accident happened in the municipality of Angostura on Tuesday, when a wall collapsed at the mine known as Bulla Loca, which can only be reached by a boat trip of several hours.
