Liverpool fans proved which side they are on in the clash between coach Arne Slot and the team's important player, Mohamed Salah.
Around 5000 fans who had travelled to Italy for Tuesday's match with Inter Milan chanted Slot's name loudly before and after the game. Liverpool won the Champions League match 1-0. And the chants are a huge boost for the Dutch Liverpool manager.
Slot did not select Salah for the match in Italy, condemning him for inappropriate comments made on Saturday. The Egyptian had stressed that the club had "thrown him under the bus" and that his relationship with the coach had deteriorated.
"So many fans in difficult circumstances for the club and this proves once again that if things go against us or there are difficult moments, we are all there for each other. We fight together and that is what the fans and players proved tonight," said Slot.
"The support of the fans means a lot to me. But it's not about me, it's about the team. And the fans were there for the team as well."
Salah is one of the biggest names in Liverpool's history. He has won two Premier League titles, the Champions League and many other trophies. Last year he was named the best player for the third time, after scoring 34 goals in all competitions and leading Liverpool to a 20th English title.
But his form has dipped at the start of this season. This is Salah's tenth season in the Premier League.
And after being left on the bench on Saturday, he made the statement that caused a stir in England. Salah was at Monday's training with the team, but was not included in the delegation that travelled to Milan.
On Tuesday, the Egyptian star posted a photo of himself working out alone in the gym at Liverpool's training complex.
The 33-year-old has 420 appearances, 250 goals and 116 assists for Liverpool. His legacy for the club is extraordinary. Salah signed a two-year contract extension with Liverpool in April. But it remains to be seen whether he will play for the club again.
