Southgate resigns as England manager

Gareth Southgate

The coach of England, Gareth Southgate, has resigned after the second defeat in a row in the final of the European Championship.

The "Three Lions" lost 2:1 to Spain in Berlin on Sunday. England were defeated in the Euro 2020 final by Italy on penalties.

The 53-year-old has managed England in 102 matches. Southgate was coach for eight years.

"As a proud Englishman, it was the honor of my life to play for England and manage England," Southgate said.

"It was everything for me and I gave my best. But it's time for a change and a new chapter," added Southgate, who had a contract until December.

"Sunday's game against Spain was my last as England coach. I joined the FA in 2011, determined to improve English football. During this time, including eight years as a selector, I have been supported by some brilliant people and they have my heartfelt thanks. I had the privilege of leading a great group of players in 102 games. Each of them was proud to wear the three lions and they have given a lot for their country.  The team we had in Germany is full of talent and they can win the trophy we all dream of".

Southgate was manager from 2016. He replaced Sam Alladryce. He was England U21 coach from 2013 to 2016. He also had a great career as a player.

Southgate's England have featured at every major event as they edged ever closer to the much-anticipated trophy.

Southgate has said he is proud of the players. He also thanked the staff for the great support during the eight years.

"We have the best fans in the world and their support means the world to me. I am an England fan and always will be. I look forward to watching and celebrating as the players continue to provide special memories and inspire the country as we know they can. Thank you, England, for everything," Southgate concluded.

Under his leadership England had one of the best periods in history. But the trophy desired by all Englishmen was not won.
