After making history with Celtic, Sadiku takes over as manager of the Swedish champion

Elena Sadiku

Elena Sadiku has returned to Sweden's elite women's football team and will be the coach of Hacken next season.

Hacken won the title with 64 points in the last edition of the "Allsvenskan", which is the elite of Sweden. For Sadiku, the most successful Albanian coach in football, it will be a big challenge. And a big step in her career as well.

She led the famous Scottish team, Celtic, for two years, and had historic successes. She won the title for the first time in the club's history, while competing in the group stage of the Champions League for the first time.

Despite the interest of several other teams, in a recent interview with "SVT Sport", she emphasized that after Hacken's interest, the decision was clear.

"There was interest from several clubs and I was interested in another club. But when Hacken contacted me, I decided quickly," stated Elena Sadiku.

"It was a very quick process. I chose Hacken because I felt it was the best for me and my development. I felt we had the same ambitions and that's why Hacken was my choice."

She stated that another major Nordic club was interested in having her as a coach. However, she did not mention the name.

Sadiku was asked if she would ever manage a national team, for example Sweden. She said that she follows the matches constantly, but at the moment it is still too early, according to her.

Meanwhile, he showed that he constantly took notes on the specifics of different teams.

"I've watched some Swedish league matches and their performance in European competitions. I've taken notes. I've followed some teams, even though I've been out of Sweden for a while. Hammarby is making big strides, as is Malmo. Djurgarden is also in the top four. Many teams have decided to invest and push women's football forward. It's not like the season when Rosengard was so dominant," she said.

As Celtic manager last year, the 32-year-old Sadiku was nominated for “The Best” award, given by the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), for the best of the year. She was among eight coaches selected by FIFA. She did not win the FIFA Best award, but was named the best coach of the year in the Scottish Premier League in 2024.

Kosovar Sadiku had a promising career as a footballer, but she suffered numerous injuries and surgeries. For this reason, she ended her playing career very early. She had 13 surgeries and retired at the age of 23. She played for Malmo, Kristianstad, Eskilstuna and Hammarby in Sweden, while with Sweden's U19s she had 14 matches and scored two goals.

She started her coaching career in 2018, and now holds a "Profi" license. She has had a role at the Chinese club Beijing Phoenix, and was also an assistant at Rosengard in Sweden and Fortuna Hjorring in Denmark. She has also led Eskilstuna as head coach, and was also at Everton U21.

The British media outlet The Guardian reported last year that she had become the youngest coach or manager to manage a team in the Champions League group stage, for either gender. She broke the record set by Julian Nagelsmann with Hoffenheim, who was in charge at 31 years and 58 days. Elena had managed Celtic before she turned 31.

She is already one of the most respected coaches in Europe.
