Paris must still improve to stay in the Champions League

Luis Enrique

The coach of Paris Saint-Germain, Luis Enrique, has praised his team after the 3:0 victory over Salzburg. Tuesday night's match was the sixth round of the Champions League. But Enrique has warned that Paris must still improve if they are to remain in Europe's elite competition for club football.

The leader of France's Ligue 1 had a terrible start in the Champions League. Suffered from Atletico Madrid, Bayern and Arsenal.

Now the Parisians have seven points from six games, while the last two rounds will be decisive for a place in the playoffs. Direct qualification to the round of 16 is not a topic in Paris.

"Football is sometimes a very unfair sport. The standings are very close and one goal can make the difference. We still have two games to play and we can still be eliminated", said Enrique.

"This was not a better match than against PSV or Atletico Madrid. I'd say it was worse, but that's football. We know we have to improve and the squad hasn't changed much. We need the points and we will try to win the next matches", added Enrique.

The coach singled out Nuno Mendes, who scored the second goal in Tuesday night's game.

"Nuno offers many choices with his physical and technical qualities. He can play in different positions. He is playing at a high level right now. Offers a lot offensively. But that can change."

Enrique now turns his attention to the game against Pep Guardiola's Manchester City on January 22. Seven days later, Paris has its last match in the league stage against Stuttgart.

"We don't have the points  that we should have. It was important to score in this match as for one goal you can be eliminated from the Champions League. We have to take the games one at a time. Now we concentrate on the match with City", said Enrique.

In Ligue 1, PSG is marching towards the new title. However, the situation of the French club in the European competition is different.
