The league is the dream, but is this Arsenal's moment in Europe?

It may seem strange to suggest that an English club reaching the Champions League final was in danger of being overshadowed. But that was almost the case with Arsenal this season.

So great was the pressure on Mikel Arteta's team to end their 22-year wait for a Premier League title that the remarkable unbeaten run that took them to the Champions League final in Budapest did not receive the glory it deserved.

Bukayo Sakho's first-half goal secured the Gunners a 1-0 victory over Atletico Madrid at the Emirates on Tuesday night in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final. With a 2-1 aggregate score, Arsenal advanced to the final.

Although the second semi-final lacked any particular brilliance, some of Arsenal's best performances this season have been in Europe.

Arsenal are the only team to remain undefeated in the Champions League, having even beaten the likes of Bayern Munich, Inter Milan and Sporting CP on their way to the final.

There has been a great desire to win the English league, and the team is now in a good position to do so, following Manchester City's draw with Everton on Monday.

The matches in Europe were mostly quiet for the London team. The team was rarely in danger of defeat or elimination.

"I think you can't underestimate what we've done in this competition, up to this point," midfielder Declan Rice told Amazon Prime.

"We have the right to celebrate the moment. It's the most prestigious competition in football. We're just trying to win it. We knew how valuable the game was. If you're not motivated for this, you're not motivated for anything else," added Rice, who was named man of the match.

Arsenal fans welcomed the team with a roar and cheers. It was the first time this had happened at the stadium, and it preceded what Arteta described as an "incredible night."

"We made history again together," said the coach. "I couldn't be happier, prouder of everyone involved in this club. The way they welcomed us outside the stadium was special and unique. The atmosphere, the support for us, created the energy. The way the fans were with us during every action. I haven't felt this in the stadium before. We knew how much it meant to everyone. The boys did an incredible job and after 20 years and only the second time in history, we are in the Champions League final," added Mikel Arteta.

Arsenal have found a way to win in recent weeks as the pressure mounts. After a 3-0 win over Fulham at the weekend, the Gunners look resurgent. 

In the Champions League, Arsenal have conceded just six goals. Arteta is proud of that. He praised Atletico for the way they compete. Arsenal are on a 14-match unbeaten run in the Champions League, a club record. They have kept a clean sheet in nine of those matches.

Although they had a huge points lead earlier in the Premier League, the moment once again seems to be Arsenal's.

Rice mentioned the suffering that came with finishing second for three consecutive years.

Arteta has tried to transform the Emirates Stadium into a hostile environment for opponents as he aims to bring trophies to north London. With many fans saying it was the best atmosphere they have ever experienced at the stadium, what is missing are trophies.
