Famous Ugandan footballer beaten to death by bandits

David Owori

Uganda is mourning the death at the age of 27 of one of the country's most famous footballers. David Owori was beaten to death by suspected robbers near his home in the capital Kampala.

Police said Owori was attacked after resisting an attempt to steal his phone and other belongings.

Owori was the captain of Sports Club Villa, the Ugandan champions. He played as a defender and midfielder. He also played for the national team.

"We have lost more than a player. We have lost a leader, brother and friend," Villa wrote in a statement.

Witnesses said the attackers threw stones at the footballer before robbing him of his belongings. They left Owori unconscious and fled.
