Paris Saint-Germain haven't had much need to strengthen a squad that was good enough to win five consecutive French titles and two consecutive Champions League titles.
However, that is exactly what coach Luis Enrique did during the summer and it remains to be seen whether it was a wise move.
"Strengthening the squad does not mean we lack confidence in the current players," said Enrique.
"Bringing in new players offers a different energy and mentality."
Spain striker Ferran Torres joined wingers Maghnes Akliouche and Mika Godts in bolstering PSG's highly effective attacking unit.

Enrique praises team mentality after PSG secure another league title
PSG are aiming for a 15th consecutive Ligue 1 title. They begin their defense of the French title on Sunday with a home match against Rennes.
It will be the first chance to see how Enrique plans to manage a front line loaded with quality players. In the long run, it will be seen how the confirmed players react when left on the bench.
Torres for example.
He scored the winning goal for Spain in the World Cup final. Torres offers excellent movement, speed and skill in the attacking line.
"He can adapt to the way we want to play," Luis Enrique said. "He can play anywhere in attack."
PSG, however, have two other players in their squad who do just that – Ballon d'Or winner Ousmane Dembele and Desire Douen.
So there is no certainty that Torres will start in a team that also includes Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and also Bradley Barcolan, who could leave in the meantime.
Akliouche caused PSG problems while playing for Monaco. But how can he dislodge Barcola, who scored three goals at the World Cup, or Kvaratskhelia, who is probably the best striker in the world?
Godts is 21 years old and has great potential for the future. He was transferred for a whopping 55 million euros. And if Barcola does not leave for Liverpool, Godts could only be the third choice.
PSG has a wide range of options, something that other teams in the French championship lack. The new edition opens on Friday with the match Marseille - Strasbourg.
And the AP has taken a look at PSG's potential challengers.
Lens
The club from the northern city has a passionate fan base, which helped propel the team last season. For the first time in many seasons, PSG had a real challenger in the title race. But Lens' players grew tired towards the end. Lens finished second and won the Coupe de France. Coach Pierre Sage left for Crystal Palace. Lens brought in German Dino Toppmoller, who speaks fluent French and likes to play attacking football. They also managed to keep hold of Florian Thauvin, the team's inspirational striker.
With new France coach Zinedine Zidane watching, Thauvin scored in Toppmoller's first game in charge as Lens won 1-0 against PSG in the French Super Cup on Sunday.
Lens plays at home to Auxerre on Saturday.

In France, Marseille – PSG derby
Marseille
Experienced coach Bruno Genesio was tasked with bringing stability to a club that had been in turmoil again last season. Marseille had two managers, Roberto De Zerbin and Habib Beyen, but failed to qualify for the Champions League and finished sixth in the French league. There was also a 5-0 defeat at the hands of PSG.
Former striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who left after his second spell at the club, said the atmosphere was not right, as many external factors were troubling the team.
Last season began with a dressing room brawl. Tensions have been high this time around after Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was stripped of the captaincy, against Genesio's wishes. The midfielder rejected a move to Newcastle, with Marseille looking to settle the score.
"It's a decision that was dictated by the club's management," Genesio said.
"It's not a decision I agree with. But I'm an employee and I have to adhere to certain obligations."
This is hardly the ideal atmosphere to begin rebuilding a team that last won the league in 2010. Without Aubameyang and Mason Greenwood, Genesio's side could be short of goals.
Monaco
The eight-time champions also had two managers last season, Adi Hutter and Sebastien Pocognoli. But they finished seventh, which was considered a disappointment. New coach Philippe Luis has been tasked with getting Monaco competitive again.
The attack will rely on American Folarin Balogun, who was in the spotlight at the World Cup.
Ansu Fati has become a member of the team, having scored 12 goals while on loan from Barcelona.
The club needs better ratings. The engagement of former star Paul Pogba has completely failed. He was injured in the preparatory phase, while last season he played few games.
Monaco plays Le Havre on Sunday.
Lille
Genesio led Lille to third place in Ligue 1 last season, thanks to a good finish.

Torres in super form secures another victory for PSG
Expecting Olivier Giroud to lead the attack again doesn't seem fair. The former France international turns 40 in September. Lille need more goals from 21-year-old Belgium winger Matias Fernandez-Pardo. But he wants to leave, with many big teams interested.
The club are also set to be without talented midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi. The 18-year-old impressed at the World Cup, where he played for Morocco. Manchester City are ready to pay €100m for Bouaddi.
