Guillermo Ochoa, considered one of the best Mexican goalkeepers in history, has announced his retirement from professional football. The 41-year-old has ended a 22-year career in football.
He had previously announced the end of his international career, but had left open the possibility of continuing at club level.
But Ochoa decided to end his entire career.
"I gave everything. I left everything on the field for the clubs I played for and the national team. And today I hang up my gloves," Ochoa wrote.
Ochoa has played for Mexico in six World Cups. Only Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have achieved this. In three of those World Cups, Ochoa was the starting goalkeeper, in Brazil 2014, Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022.
After starting at Club America, he moved to Europe where he was part of teams such as Ajaccio, Malaga, Granada, Standard Liege, Salernitana and several other teams.
