What gives Bayern hope for the match against PSG?

It feels like weeks have passed since Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich put on a rare spectacle in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final. Maybe that's just because the 5-4 scoreline still resonates. And rightly so, of course.

In reality, there are only eight days between the first leg at the Parc des Princes and the return leg at the Allianz Arena, which takes place on Wednesday at 21:00 PM.

Not much has happened since then. Both PSG and Bayern drew in their domestic leagues at the weekend. Naturally, both teams made changes to their lineups.

While Luis Enrique rested almost his entire starting line-up against Lorient, Vincent Kompany brought on the big four of Harry Kane, Michael Oliseh, Luis Diaz and Joshua Kimmich at the start of the second half in the 3-3 draw with Heidenheim. Kompany would have brought on the stars even if Bayern were not suffering, out of respect for their opponents and their fans, as the Belgian coach explained.

The question now is how rested both teams will be for the second semi-final. Overall, the freshness factor favors PSG. Ousmane Dembele, the best player in the world and top scorer from the first leg, has started only nine matches in Ligue 1. And while Kompany has lacked viable rotation options in recent weeks, Enrique brought on recently recovered midfielder Fabian Ruiz as a substitute in the first leg. He then brought on Bradley Barcolan, who Bayern would be keen to sign in the summer.
Ahead of the second leg, Kompany may be a little more relaxed. Tom Bischof is back in the team for the match against Heidenheim after recovering from injury. While he still doesn't have a leading role, he is considered an important alternative for Bayern and has already proven that.

There is hope that the supertalent Lennart Karl, who had to rest due to muscle problems, will also be ready on Wednesday. Karl could also be used as a substitute, but no one knows how long the second leg will last. If Bayern is ahead by one goal after 90 minutes, all players will have to play another 30 minutes.

Leon Goretzka, who was also a substitute in Paris, impressed with two goals at the weekend but struggled on Tuesday. He is expected to be considered again later in the match, as a possible replacement for Jamal Musiala or Aleksandar Pavlović.

In attack, Kane, Oliseh and Luis Diaz will have a leading role, while in defence only Min-Jae Kim will be an option for the latter stages of the match. Raphael Guerreiro and Serge Gnabry are available, while youngster Bara Sapoko Ndiaye has not registered for the Champions League.
