Spanish coach Xabi Alonso has ended his adventure with a draw at Bayer Leverkusen.
Leverkusen drew 2-2 with Mainz on Saturday in the final round of the Bundesliga.
Paul Nebel gave the home team the lead in the 35th minute. Patrik Schick equalized in the 49th minute. Five minutes later, Schick put Leverkusen ahead 2:1. The visitors' joy did not last long as Jonathan Burkardt equalized 2:2 in the 63rd minute. He was accurate from the penalty spot.
Leverkusen ends the season in second place with 69 points. Mainz ends the championship in sixth place with 52 points.
For Alonso, this was the last match at the head of the technical staff at Leverkusen.
The 43-year-old Alonso announced his departure from Leverkusen at the end of the season a few days ago. He is expected to soon become Real Madrid coach.
