The young goalkeeper of Belgium believes that he will replace Courtois

Belgium's first-choice goalkeeper Koen Casteels believes he can step out of Thibaut Courtois' shadow at the European Championships starting on Friday.

Casteels was last week named as the first-choice goalkeeper in Europe, where Belgium will be without Real Madrid's Courtois.

He had a clash with the coach last year and then got injured and was out almost until the end of the 2023/2024 season. But he returned in time to be in the Champions League final where he made some decisive saves.

Casteels, who turns 32 later this month, said his 13-year spell in the Bundesliga puts him in good stead ahead of the European Championship.

"I am not feeling any additional pressure due to the fact that I have to replace Courtois", Casteels said on Thursday at the press conference.

"Everyone who is here tries to present themselves as well as possible. I will do that as well. I don't feel any pressure and I haven't changed on the training field since I was the second goalkeeper. I won't do anything different now," Casteels said.

He has ten appearances for Belgium.
