For five months, Kosovo imported nearly 3 billion euros of goods and exported around 420 million.

In the first five months of 2026 alone, Kosovo imported goods worth nearly 3 billion, marking an increase of nearly 162 million euros compared to the same period last year. Germany, China and Turkey are the three countries from which Kosovo imported the most goods. During this period, there was also an increase in exports, although the presence of Kosovo goods in the foreign market continues to be limited.

Goods from Germany, China and Turkey continue to dominate the Kosovo market.

For five months, goods worth 1 billion and 131 million euros were imported from these three countries, which constitutes about 38 percent of all imports. During this period, imports were made worth nearly 3 billion, marking an increase of nearly 162 million euros compared to the same period last year.

Data from Customs and the Statistics Agency have shown that during May, goods worth 635 million euros were imported, or over 5 percent more than in May last year.

"According to data, the main import groups consist of: machinery, mechanical and electrical equipment, mineral products, prepared foods, beverages and tobacco, means of transport, basic metals and articles thereof, etc.", states the publication of the Kosovo Agency of Statistics.

Customs data for the period January-May showed that there was also an increase in the presence of local production in international markets.

Goods with the inscription "Made In Kosovo" have reached a value of 419 million euros or an increase of 16 percent compared to the same period last year.

In May, goods worth 94 million euros were exported, which compared to April is a slight decrease of 4 million euros.

"According to data, the main export groups consist of: basic metals and articles thereof, plastics, rubber and articles thereof, prepared foods, beverages and tobacco, various manufactured articles, mineral products, etc.", says the ASK publication.

Despite the increase in exports, the trade deficit continues to be high, indicating Kosovo's heavy dependence on imported goods.

In 2025, goods worth 7 billion euros were imported, while less than 1 billion were exported.

A recently published report by the Ministry of Trade also highlighted the dependence on imports. The report identifies three product groups to expand exports.

It mentions advanced construction products, processed agricultural products, and wood-based products.

“Wood products and furniture emerge as the strongest and most structurally competitive category of Kosovo’s exports. Tariff-free access, simple rules of change of origin (heading), and manageable non-tariff requirements strongly favor further wood processing and value-added production. Export performance shows steady growth in furniture, upholstered seating, and prefabricated wooden structures, with Switzerland and Germany as key value markets and CEFTA markets providing volume stability,” the MINTI report states.

According to this report, the main political and industrial challenge is not market access, but supporting firms to meet standards, diversify markets, and expand production.
