"Sons of Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu" in spirit with Arbëresh
Hora e Arbërshëvet is the shooting location of "Sons of Gjegj Kastrioti Skënderbeu" directed by Vranin Gecajt. There are signs that preserve the identity of the Arberes of Sicily, but call for them to be promoted in order not to fade from globalization. The narratives start from the embodiment of Arbëresh with the figure of Skanderbeg to the clothing and church rites, which appear as a potpourri of Arbëresh practices and traditions.
The Arbëresh people of Italy have chosen Pristina to unfold the story about Skënderbeu. The documentary "Sons of Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu" by Vranin Gecaj turned on the projector of "Kino Armata" on Monday night as it preceded the celebrations of November 28. In 30 minutes, I bring several stories that remind the people of Arbëresh and the preservation of culture between generations. Made during a visit in April 2023 at the Easter celebration of Hora e Arbëreshëvet in the region of Palermo in Italy, it captures stories starting from the incarnation of Arbëreshëvet with the figure of Skanderbeg to the clothing and church rites, which appear as potpourri Arbëresh practices and traditions that are part of the supporting pillars of the Albanian identity.
The figure and function of Skënderbeu in the collective historical memory and in the identity roots of Arbëresh people is related to the tragic fate of the hero, who pulled behind himself and that of Arbëresh people. Starting from his death and the intensification of the expansion of the Ottoman Empire, the migrations of Albanians took on the proportions of real exodus, which left deep traces both in the country of origin and in the new settlements, and in this case in the south of Italy.
