Personal names and nationality in medieval Serbia

Facsimile of the article "Personal names and nationality in medieval Serbia" by Stanoje Stanojević published in "Južnoslovenski Filolog", VIII, Belgrade, 1928-1929, ff. 151-154

Based on the material presented, one thing is clear and certain: the personal names on our medieval monuments cannot in any case be taken as evidence from which one can reliably deduce one's nationality

Stanoje Stanojević

It is commonly thought that the proper names in our medieval chrysobulae indicate the nationality of the person in question. Therefore, every person with a Vlach name in our documents is taken as of Vlach nationality, just as every person with an Albanian name is taken as an Albanian. In various studies, the proper names in our memorials have been distorted in this way - among others, St. Novakoviqi and Prof. K. Jireceku. However, this view is incorrect and wrong. From the first chrysobulla of Deçan, which generally has the most personal names preserved, I have collected and arranged data in which it is noted that there were cases when the father bore a foreign name (Vlach, Albanian or Bulgarian), while his son a Serbian name (1), or, on the contrary, the father had a Serbian name, while the son had a foreign name (II). Furthermore, there were cases when the grandfather bore a foreign name, but the grandson or grandsons had Serbian names (III); sometimes the grandfather had a Serbian name, while the grandson has a foreign name (IV). There are cases when the grandfather bears a Serbian name, the son a foreign name, while the grandchildren still bear Serbian names (V). Sometimes the father and son have Serbian names, while the grandchildren have foreign names (VI). Sometimes there are cases when a man has a foreign name, while the son and grandson have Serbian names (VII). In the end, it happens quite often that the brothers bear different names: one Serbian, and the other foreign (VIII).
