The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Thameen Al-Kheetan, has come to the defense of Real Madrid striker Kylian Mbappe, following attacks on him by Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarillan.
In recent days, a fierce debate has taken place between Mbappe and Amarilla.
Amarilla made racist comments mocking the origin, education and appearance of the France captain.
Mbappe also reacted to Amarilla by calling her a "disgusting woman" who is unworthy of serving in the Paraguayan Congress.
"The racist and inhumane comments made towards French footballer Kylian Mbappe by Paraguayan Senator Celeste Amarilla are unacceptable and condemnable. The racist incidents reported during the World Cup reflect a much broader phenomenon affecting football and sport in general," a UN statement said.
