Renowned Argentine player confirms end of international career

Nicolas Otamendi

Argentina defender Nicolas Otamendi has confirmed the end of his international career. Otamendi played for Argentina for 17 years, winning one World Cup and two Copa Americas.

The 38-year-old made 139 appearances for Argentina and was part of the team that reached the World Cup finals in the USA, Canada and Mexico.

"Today I have to write the most difficult words of my career. As fate would have it, my last match was the World Cup final. It was not the result we wanted, but I leave with my head held high knowing that this team gave everything until the last second. Thank you Argentina for allowing me to fulfill my dream of becoming world champion," Otamendi wrote.

He recently moved to River Plate in Argentina. He ended a 16-year career in Europe, where he played for Porto, Valencia, Manchester City and Benfica.
