Egypt coach says Argentina is favored to win the World Cup

Egypt coach Hossam Hassan has made another strong statement about the developments in the match against Argentina. The Egyptians believe that they were greatly harmed by the referee.

Argentina won 3:2 and advanced to the quarterfinals. There were some questionable situations.

"Life is unfair. The world is unfair. Okay, but I guess there's no justice in sports? I'm not convinced by this result and the way things went in this match," Hassan said at a press conference.

"The referee was unfair. God is enough for me and he will fix things. The referee ruined the efforts of an entire country. The cup is headed towards Argentina. We have not seen respect or fair play. A penalty was disallowed and a second incident that should have been checked for a penalty for us was not even looked at by VAR. The second goal was disallowed, strangely, for whatever reason. It seems there was pressure from the Argentine side on the referee that brought this about," the Egypt coach stressed.

In his post-match statement, Hassan said that Egypt suffered injustice and that the result was influenced by "internal" and "external" factors.

"The referee was not good, he was unfair. His unfairness was clear. He hurt us from the beginning of the match. He didn't want us to win. It was a rigged match," Zico said as he left the field.

"I really wanted to bring joy to them (the fans), but I apologize. It didn't happen. It wasn't our fault. That referee... It seems like this match was rigged. We were winning 2-0 and he kept attacking us. Congratulations to Argentina for another World Cup, apparently," Zico said with irony.

Enzo Fernandez scored in extra time to give Argentina a remarkable 3-2 victory over Egypt and a place in the World Cup quarter-finals on Tuesday.

"I had been waiting for that goal for about three years, since the World Cup in Qatar. To have the opportunity to experience moments like this... honestly, I thank God, I feel privileged. And I want to single out my teammates. We have a phenomenal group, a group that never gives up, despite the difficulties and obstacles. We are always united. Thank you to my teammates, the technical staff and everyone who supports us here, as well as all the Argentines at home. Well, another step forward," said Fernandez.

The defending champions were 2-0 down by the 79th minute after goals from Yasser Ibrahim in the 15th minute and Mostafa Zico in the 58th minute at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. But Argentina scored two late goals through Cristian Romero and Lionel Messi to get back into the game.

Messi, who was in tears after the final whistle, scored his eighth goal of this year's tournament in the 83rd minute to tie the game at 2-2. It was his 21st goal at the World Cup, extending his record.

Messi scored the equalizer just minutes after assisting Argentina's first goal, a header by Cristian Romero in the 79th minute.

Messi, who assisted Argentina's first goal, also missed a goal-scoring opportunity when his penalty was saved by Egypt goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir in the 21st minute. He also hit the post in the 31st minute when the score was 1-0 in Egypt's favor.

Messi's goal against Egypt was his eighth at the World Cup, extending his scoring streak to nine consecutive matches for Argentina and moving him to the top of a tight race for the Golden Boot with Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland on seven goals.

England's Harry Kane is also in the running with six goals.

Messi also broke the assist record. He has nine assists in the World Cup, breaking the record set by legend Diego Maradona, who had eight.

Yasser Ibrahim put Egypt ahead in the 15th minute with a header. Mustafa Zico scored Egypt's second goal in the 67th minute after an assist from Haissem Hassan.

Messi has now scored in a record nine consecutive World Cup matches since 2022. Tuesday's goal was his 13th in the nine-match span.

Messi finished second in the race for the Golden Shoe behind Mbappe in 2022 with seven goals, leading Argentina to the title. In 2014, he was third with four goals.

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni appeared excited after the victory.

"I can't lift my head, sorry. I'm really emotional right now," said Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni. "What a group of players, men. That's all, I have to go."

Argentina is aiming to become the first team to win two consecutive titles since Brazil in 1958 and 1962.
