Three red cards were shown in the first match of the World Cup, but the chance of players missing the World Cup final due to suspension has been greatly reduced after FIFA introduced an additional amnesty for the championship that started on Thursday.
Red cards lead to an automatic one-match suspension, while the punishment can be more severe if the offense is serious.
However, the most common suspensions during the World Cup are from the accumulation of yellow cards. And this is where FIFA has acted.
In major events, players who receive yellow cards in two different matches are suspended for the following match. This has led to some painful absences in the past, such as Michael Ballack in the 2002 final or Claudio Caniggia in the 1990 final.
Since the 2010 World Cup, yellow cards have been erased after the quarter-finals, effectively ending any chance of a player being suspended for the finals through the accumulation of yellow cards.

For the World Cup that has already begun, FIFA has gone a step further. It has included an additional amnesty, effectively wiping out the card list twice. Group stage cards will not count in the knockout stage. Players will start the knockout stage with “zero yellow cards”, regardless of whether they have been booked in the group matches.
