Monday marked the 40th anniversary of Diego Armando Maradona's goal, known as the "Hand of God".
Maradona's goal that gave Argentina a 1-0 lead in that match against England – but should not have been conceded – has become part of football legend. Maradona jumped as if to head the ball, but instead punched it and sent it past England goalkeeper Peter Shilton. Maradona later joked that the goal was scored "partly with Maradona's head and partly with the hand of God", leading to his iconic nickname.
Maradona scored his second goal, which was brilliant against England just four minutes later. He ran nearly 70 metres from his own half and passed half of the England team before scoring to make it 2-0. The goal was voted the Goal of the Century at the 2002 World Cup. Argentina won the match 2-1 and were crowned world champions at the end of the tournament. Maradona died in 2020 at the age of 60.
