Senior officials from Donald Trump's administration in the United States are preparing to meet with senior Russian officials to begin talks aimed at ending the fighting in Ukraine, according to several CNN sources.

National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff are expected to travel to Saudi Arabia to meet with the Russians. One of CNN's sources said the meeting is expected in the coming days.

The sources have declined to say which Russian officials will be included in the meeting, but according to CNN, a senior official and intelligence and economic officials are expected, as well as Kirill Dmitriev, the Russian official who played a role in the recent prisoner release agreements.

Earlier this week, US President Donald Trump said negotiations to end the three-year war in Ukraine should begin "immediately" after a "long and very productive" phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
