Switzerland discovers the first case of the coronavirus with the Indian variant

Switzerland has detected its first case of the variant of the coronavirus first discovered in India, the Public Health Authority said on Saturday.

"The first case of the Indian variant of COVID-19 has been detected in Switzerland," the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health tweeted.

The virus variant was found in "a passenger who was transiting through an airport".

India is facing a dramatic surge in infections, registering 346.786 more cases on Saturday - the highest number recorded by a single country since the start of the pandemic.

Other countries have been on high alert for the variant, known as the B1617, which has suspended flights with India.
