The Swiss government announced on Thursday that Russia has not been invited "at this stage" of the peace talks to be held in Switzerland in mid-June.
The talks are expected to help achieve peace in the conflict between Moscow and Ukraine that began on February 24, 2022, Reuters reports.
"Switzerland is convinced that Russia should be involved in this process. A peace process without Russia is not possible", the Swiss government declared.
Russian President Vladimir Putin last month scoffed at a planned round of Ukraine peace talks in Switzerland, warning that Moscow would not accept any binding plan that would ignore its interests.
The Swiss government said in April it would hold a high-level conference in June, which is expected to help chart a path to peace in Ukraine after more than two years of war there. The government has said it hopes Russia will join the process one day.
But Putin has said that Russia has not been invited to join the June talks, while emphasizing that a peace process cannot happen without Russia.
