Massive fires sweeping across Spain and France have forced the evacuation of over 65 people, while Spanish authorities admit that the largest fire near Madrid has become impossible to control.
The head of emergency management at the Madrid regional government, Carlos Novillo, has said that the fire is "at its peak" and that extinguishing it is currently "beyond the capacities" of firefighting teams.
According to him, the flames are spreading towards the municipalities of Robledo de Chavela and Fresnedillas de la Oliva, located several dozen kilometers west of Madrid. Residents of these areas have been ordered to evacuate immediately.
"It is not possible to fight the fire in that area, so protective measures are being taken," Novillo declared.
According to authorities, around 25 people have been evacuated in Spain, while over 20 others have been ordered to remain isolated in their homes due to the risk of flames and smoke.
Meanwhile, in southwestern France, more than 44 people have been evacuated over the past two days due to a large fire in the Gironde region.
