The death toll from a fire in a residential building in the city of Mangaf in Kuwait has reached 49, the Ministry of the Interior has announced.
Images published on social networks show the fire engulfing the lower part of the building and black smoke coming from the upper floors, the BBC reports.
Most of the dead are reported to have been foreign workers who lived in the building.
Kuwaiti Deputy Prime Minister Sheikh Fahad Yusuf al-Sabah has accused the property owners of greed, adding that failure to comply with building standards has led to the tragedy.
"Unfortunately, the greed of property owners has led to this. They violate the rules and this is the result of the violation," stated al-Sabah.

Local media have reported that the building housed 196 workers and there are thoughts that it may have been overcrowded.
Fire in a building in Kuwait, at least 41 dead
A fire that broke out on Wednesday in a building where workers were staying in the city of Mangaf in Kuwait, has left at least 41 dead, said the Deputy Prime Minister of Kuwait, Sheikh Fahad Yusuf Saud Al-Sabah for the "Reuters" agency.
The Deputy Prime Minister accused the property owners of violating the rules and greed, while he said that these factors contributed to the incident.
The incident was reported to the authorities at 6 am, according to General Eid Rashed Hamad.
"The building where the fire broke out was inhabited by workers and there was a large number of employees there. Dozens were saved, but unfortunately there were many deaths due to smoke inhalation," said a police commander. "We always alert and warn against the gathering of many employees in one building."
Kuwait's Ministry of Health has said that at least 43 people have been hospitalized due to the fire.
Authorities have extinguished the fire and are investigating its cause.
