Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he had held discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron about the possibility of deploying Western troops to Ukraine to protect any peace deal that ends the nearly three-year war with Russia.
Zelensky's announcement came ahead of an official visit to Kiev on Tuesday by German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius.
He arrived in Kiev on an unannounced visit after a meeting in Warsaw on Monday with his counterparts from France, the United Kingdom, Italy and Poland.
Germany and four other countries are Europe's top five military spenders.
Pistorius told the German news agency dpa that his visit to Kiev aims to underscore Germany's strong support for Ukraine at a time when the term of US President-elect Donald Trump, which begins next week, looks set to bring profound changes to Washington's policy on the war.

Pistorius said his visit "is a signal that Germany, as the largest NATO country in Europe, stands by Ukraine, not only, but with the group of five members and many other allies."
Trump has criticized the cost of the war to American taxpayers through large military aid packages for Ukraine and has vowed to bring the conflict to a swift end.
