Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and First Lady Olena Zelenska arrived in France on Thursday to take part in the 80th anniversary of D-Day.
Leaders, veterans and visitors from around the world have paid their respects to the D-Day generation in moving ceremonies taking place on and around the Normandy beaches where the Allies landed 80 years ago, the AP reports.
The anniversary is being marked while the biggest war since the end of World War II is taking place in Europe, the one in Ukraine.
Zelensky's presence at D-Day commemorations with world leaders who are supporting Ukraine's fight against Russian occupation, including US President Joe Biden - will inevitably bring together the horrific past of World War II with the charged present.
"Allies defended Europe's freedom then, Ukrainians defend Europe's freedom now. Unity won then, true unity can win now," Zelensky wrote on his social media pages.
