Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has welcomed the ceasefire between the US and Iran, adding that Kiev is ready to "respond in kind" if Moscow ceases attacks.

"Ukraine has always called for a ceasefire in the war waged by Russia here in Europe against our state and our people, and we support a ceasefire in the Middle East and the Gulf, which paves the way for diplomatic efforts," he wrote in X.

"It is clear to everyone that a ceasefire can create the necessary preconditions for an agreement," Zelensky added.

Ukraine had previously praised the US's "determination" in attacking Iran, which is a close ally of Russia and which has supplied thousands of drones that have been used to strike Ukraine.

Kiev has repeatedly called for Moscow to agree to a complete ceasefire in its four-year war so that the two sides can negotiate a peace deal.

Russia says it wants comprehensive peace terms to be agreed before it will stop fighting.

Ukraine has also sent more than 200 specialists to the Middle East to help defend against drone attacks by Iran.
