A second elderly person has died from extreme heat following a week-long heat wave in the eastern Mediterranean island nation, a Cyprus health official said.

An 84-year-old woman died a day after being hospitalized on Friday, State Health Services Organization spokesman Charalambos Charilaou said. He said three other elderly patients are in serious condition, AP reports.

Temperatures on the island have risen throughout the week, exceeding 40 degrees Celsius.

High temperatures and strong winds have also hampered firefighting efforts, including in a mountainous area southwest of the capital Nicosia, where more than 3.2 square kilometers of forest burned, threatening a village.

Last week, 49 residents in two communities in the island's western Paphos district were evacuated to hotels after a wildfire threatened their homes, as planes from Greece and Jordan joined the firefighting effort.
