Colombian presidential candidate shot in the head remains in critical condition

Colombian Senator Miguel Uribe, a potential presidential candidate, remains in critical condition after being shot in Bogota on Saturday, the hospital where he is being treated said on Tuesday.

Uribe, 39, is a member of the right-wing opposition party, the Democratic Center, and was shot in the head while giving a speech at a campaign event in a public park in the capital, Reuters reports.

"We continue to take the necessary actions to mitigate the impact of the injuries," the Santa Fe Foundation Hospital said in a statement, detailing that the senator remains in intensive care.

The shooting, which was filmed, has shocked Colombia, evoking political violence from previous decades.

Leftist President Gustavo Petro, who has vowed to bring peace to the country, said on Sunday he had ordered additional security for opposition leaders in response to further threats.

He added that former president Alvaro Uribe and right-wing politicians Maria Fernanda Cabal, Abelardo de la Espriella and Victoria Eugenia Davila will immediately receive additional security.
