Charlie Kirk, a conservative political activist and co-founder of Turning Point USA, has been shot dead during an event at Utah Valley University.
The perpetrator is believed to have fired once from a nearby rooftop, according to the Utah Department of Public Safety, which is leading the investigation along with the FBI.
The search for the murder suspect is still ongoing. Two people who were considered suspects were later released, the department said.
US President Donald Trump has described Kirk's death as a "dark day for America" and blamed rhetoric from the "radical left" for causing political violence.
Trump has credited Kirk with mobilizing the youth vote for him.
