Ukraine attacks Russia, at least 12 dead and about 40 injured

A Ukrainian drone attack on Monday in the Russian city of Nizhnekamsk has killed at least 12 people and injured 39 others, authorities in the Tatarstan region have announced.

Ukraine has been targeting Russian oil facilities with long-range missiles almost daily in recent months. These successive attacks have caused fuel shortages in Russia, reduced Russian oil refining capacity, and alarmed Russian public opinion.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says this is a campaign to force Russian President Vladimir Putin to sit at the negotiating table and end the occupation of Ukraine, which has now entered its fifth year.

Nizhnekamsk was hit by a "massive" drone attack, targeting industrial and civilian facilities, on Monday morning, according to the press service of Tatarstan's leader, Rustam Minnikhanov.
Ukrainian officials have not yet commented on the attack.

Nizhnekamsk is located about 1.200 kilometers east of the Ukrainian border and has a population of about 240.000. The city is an important oil processing center and has two refineries as well as a petrochemical plant.

Ukrainian long-range drones, developed domestically, have been flying ever greater distances inside Russian territory. Some have now reached as far as Siberia, some 2.000 kilometers from the border between the two countries.

"We give fully justified responses and any Russian attack will be met with our response. Russia's war will be felt more and more at home, in Russia," Zelensky said on social media on Sunday evening.

"The only reason this war is still going on is Russia's unwillingness to end it," he added.

Russia has also regularly bombed Ukraine from the air, using missiles, powerful bombs and drones, hitting civilian areas and causing thousands of civilian casualties, according to the United Nations.

The World Health Organization's European office said on Monday that one of its warehouses in the central Dnipro region of Ukraine had been hit twice in less than 24 hours.
