Ukraine and Russia exchange sick and wounded prisoners

Ukraine and Russia exchanged another group of sick and seriously wounded soldiers on Thursday, officials from both countries confirmed, Reuters reported.

"All Ukrainian troops need medical treatment," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on the Telegram social network, without going into details about the exact number.

Kiev and Moscow had officially agreed to a major exchange of prisoners of war and dead soldiers during talks held in Istanbul earlier this month.

Since then, Russia and Ukraine have exchanged thousands of prisoners of war, focusing on young people under the age of 25, the seriously wounded and the sick. There are hopes that these exchanges could turn into some of the largest exchanges in the war that was sparked by Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

The Russian Defense Ministry has announced that a group of Russian soldiers have been taken from Ukraine and crossed the border into Belarus, in accordance with the agreement reached on June 2.

"They are being provided with the necessary psychological and medical assistance," the ministry said in a statement on the Telegram social network.

On Wednesday, Ukraine said it had repatriated the bodies of 1,212 soldiers killed in the war. Kremlin aide Vladimir Medinsky said Russia had brought home the bodies of 27 Russian soldiers.
