US President Donald Trump has told CNN that Hamas faces "total obliteration" if the group refuses to relinquish power and control of Gaza, amid ongoing efforts to move forward with his proposed ceasefire plan.

"Total annihilation!" Trump told CNN journalist Jake Tapper when asked in a text message what would happen if Hamas insisted on staying in power.

Tapper pushed the president to talk about Hamas's response to his 20-point ceasefire proposal, citing Senator Lindsey Graham's interpretation that Hamas had in fact rejected the plan by insisting on "disarmament, keeping Gaza under Palestinian control, and tying the release of hostages to negotiations."

Trump added that he hopes his ceasefire proposal will become a reality and stressed that he is working hard to achieve it.
