US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Thursday that begins the process of dismantling the Department of Education in the United States, fulfilling one of his campaign promises, CNN reports.

During the signing of the order, the US president was surrounded by young children sitting near his desk in the White House. These children, who represented the next generation of students, participated in a staged moment where they also signed letters in a folder, imitating the president's action.

"We are giving the power to parents and local schools to decide on the education of our children," Trump said after signing the order.

"The Department of Education has long been a neglectful institution and incapable of addressing the real needs of students," he added.

The US president has called the Department of Education "tainted by liberal ideology." The White House has said the department will not be completely shut down for now. It will retain some critical functions, such as managing federal student loans and various grants.

But the final dissolution of the Department can only be accomplished with Congressional approval.
