President Donald Trump on Monday called for all air traffic controllers to "go back to work, immediately", warning that those who do not will face penalties, while promising bonuses to those who have continued to work during the government shutdown.
"Anyone who does not return will be penalized significantly. For those air traffic controllers who were great patriots and they didn't take no day break during the 'Democratic Shutdown Hoax', I will recommend a bonus of $10 for distinguished service to our country,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social network. He added that those who did not work “will have a negative mark, at least in my mind, on their record.”
After the most difficult weekend for air traffic controllers since the government shutdown began, delays due to staffing shortages were still reported Monday morning, despite the possibility of a deal to end the crisis. Controllers are required to report to work during the shutdown but are not being paid.
Trump administration Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has said that many inspectors are considering taking on second jobs to cover expenses. He cited cases of inspectors driving for companies like Uber or delivering food through DoorDash to pay their bills.
Trump on Monday also called on any comptroller who wants to leave his job to do so without "any pay or compensation," adding that they will be replaced by "true patriots."
"For those who did nothing but complain and take time off, even though everyone knew they would be paid." FULLY after a short time, I am not happy with you.,” Trump wrote. "If you want to leave the service in the near future, don't hesitate to do so, without ANY "Pay or reward! You will be replaced quickly by true patriots," he concluded.
