US President Donald Trump has declared that Iran was a threat to the US, in response to the resignation of his counterterrorism director, Joe Kent, due to the war on Iran.

During a meeting in the Oval Office on Tuesday with Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin, Trump said he had always thought Kent was a weak man on security issues.

"I read his statement. I always thought he was a good guy, but I always thought he was weak on security, very weak on security."

"I didn't know him well... But when I read his statement I realized it's good that he's gone, because he said Iran was not a threat. Iran was a threat, every country understood what a threat Iran was," Trump added.

In his resignation letter, Kent said he could not support war on Iran and that Iran did not pose an immediate threat.

Kent also said the US was pushed by Israel to start the war as he urged Trump to "change course."
