US President Donald Trump began his speech on Tuesday by arguing that, while other leaders have talked about peace, he is someone who has "brought peace."
"As president of the most extraordinary nation in history, I have no interest in allowing the risks to increase for another day," Trump said, sticking closely to the text prepared for his speech.
"So, while others have talked, I have acted. While others have talked about peace, I have brought peace. While others have ignored threats, I have confronted them. While others have talked about courage, America has shown it. While others have promised strength, I have used it to make America the most powerful country in the world," Trump declared.
The president has said there was "no better example" of such a threat, and of America's response to it — than Iran.
"There is no better example of a threat that has been allowed to grow, putting the world at risk, than the number one state sponsor of terror, the Islamic Republic of Iran," Trump said.
