US President Donald Trump has said he will impose an additional 100% tariff on imports from China starting next month.

He threatened to pull out of a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. He later said he had not canceled it, but that he did not know "we were going to hold" the meeting.

"I'll be there anyway," he said.

On Friday, Trump criticized Beijing's move to tighten controls on rare earth exports, accusing China of becoming "very hostile" and trying to hold the world "hostage," the BBC reported.

China dominates the production of rare earth minerals and other materials, which are integral parts for cars, phones and other devices.
