United States President Donald Trump has said that Russia must reach an agreement to end the four-year war in Ukraine.

Trump said he had a "very good" meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and announced that the two leaders would meet again later in the day.

Speaking to reporters in France where the G7 Summit is being held, Trump stressed the need to reach an agreement between Russia and Ukraine to end the conflict.

"Russia needs to make a deal. They've lost an incredible number of people, as has Ukraine. Last month alone, both sides lost about 35 soldiers. On average, the losses amount to 25 people a month, mostly young soldiers," Trump said.

The US president added that talks are ongoing and that he also had a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday.

According to Trump, relations between the leaders of Russia and Ukraine remain tense.

"There are many disagreements and dissatisfactions between the two leaders," he added, hinting that the challenges to reaching an agreement remain great.

The second meeting between Trump and Zelensky is expected to take place later in the day.
