US President Donald Trump said on Monday night that he disagreed with the decision to release on parole five men arrested under anti-terrorism laws near a US air base in England.
Trump told reporters he was "surprised" that the five young British men, arrested on Sunday on suspicion of explosives and terrorist acts near the base, had been released on bail.
"I'm surprised they released them. I wouldn't have done that," Trump said in the Oval Office. "We wouldn't have released them," he added.
The RAF Fairford base, owned by the United Kingdom, has been used by US bombers during decades of conflicts in the Middle East, including this year's war with Iran.
The suspects arrested on Sunday morning were released on Monday, while counter-terrorism investigators said they were looking into "multiple lines of inquiry," including the possibility of a connection to Iran.
"I know the answer," Trump said when asked if there was a connection to Iran.
"I could be very specific, but I prefer not to say it," he added.
Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has stated that he strongly believes that a foreign actor is behind the plot.
