(Updated article) - Eight people have died overnight while trying to cross the channel from France to England, according to officials in France.
Rescue teams were alerted as soon as the boat ran into trouble in the northern waters of the English Channel at around midnight local time.
The boat had about 50 people on board and had begun to sink into the water not far from the coast.
Sunday's incident came a week after 12 people, including six children and a pregnant woman, died on a boat carrying dozens of migrants off the French coast.
The September 3 incident was the deadliest on the English Channel this year.
