At least 12 people have died off the coast of northern France after a boat carrying dozens of migrants capsized on Tuesday morning, according to authorities quoted by French media.

The French coast guard says it will soon provide information on the search and rescue operation, the BBC reports.

A major search and rescue operation is underway in the English Channel after the boat capsized.

It is not yet clear how many people were on board the ship when it capsized off the coast of Le Portel in northern France.

The Minister of the Interior, Gerald Darmanin, is expected to visit the area this afternoon.
