Typhoon Kalmaegi has caused at least 188 deaths in the Philippines and five in Vietnam, according to the latest data from both countries.
The storm is now moving westward, into Cambodia and Laos, after passing through central Vietnam on Thursday with winds of up to 149 km/h, the BBC reports.
Towns along Vietnam's central coast were littered with debris this morning after taking the brunt of the storm overnight. Strong winds toppled trees, ripped off roofs and shattered windows. Thousands of people took shelter in schools and public buildings, while the military was called in to help with cleanup and relief efforts.
Vietnamese authorities have warned of possible flooding in low-lying areas. Central Vietnam has experienced record rainfall over the past week, which has killed 50 people.
Earlier this week, the same storm devastated parts of the Philippines, when heavy rains triggered landslides and flash floods in residential areas. The Philippine government has declared a state of natural disaster for the entire country as it prepares for another typhoon forming in the Pacific Ocean.
