British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said on Tuesday he was "sickened" to see body camera footage of 18-year-old student Henry Nowak being handcuffed and arrested before his death.

At a press conference, Starmer said the police need to answer a lot of questions about this case.

"There are serious questions for the police to answer," he said, including how "allegations of racism" informed decision-making.

Surveillance footage shows Nowak handcuffed and telling officers "I can't breathe" shortly before he died, after his killer Vickrum Digwa, 23, lied to officers at the scene, claiming he was the victim of a racist attack.

Digwa, 23, was sentenced to life in prison on Monday for the murder of Nowak in Southampton in December.

Earlier, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said Nowak's murder was "an act of pure evil."

She has also warned against the spread of “misinformation” after a police officer, unrelated to the case, was mistakenly identified and forced to relocate to protect his family.

A Hampshire Police spokesman told the BBC that one police officer had resigned, but three others involved were continuing to serve.
