Russia carried out its deadliest attack so far this year on the Ukrainian capital Kiev and other cities overnight, killing at least 17 people, including a 12-year-old child, and wounding dozens more, in drone and missile strikes, officials said Thursday.
In Russia, a major drone attack from Ukraine on the Black Sea port of Tuapse has killed two people, including a 14-year-old girl, injured seven others and caused a large fire, Russian officials and media reported. The port is home to a major oil refinery as well as an export hub for oil, coal and fertilizers.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Wednesday night's attack showed that Russia did not deserve any easing of global policies or lifting of sanctions, while about 100 people were injured in addition to those who lost their lives.
"There can be no normalization of Russia as it is today. The pressure on Russia must work. And it is important to fulfill any promises of assistance to Ukraine in a timely manner," he added.
Moscow has said it carried out a "massive" attack on Ukraine that hit energy targets used by Ukrainian forces as well as cruise missile production and drones, without giving details.
