The Pentagon announced that 11,000 US troops are stationed in Afghanistan - a much higher number than previously claimed.
Officials said the new figure includes temporary and covert units as well as regular forces.
Earlier it was said that there are 8,400 American soldiers in Afghanistan.
The new announcement comes as the Pentagon prepares to send 4,000 more troops to Afghanistan to help fight the Taliban.
The increase in the number of troops is part of the new strategy for Afghanistan, announced last week by the US president, Donald Trump.
