The United States and Iran exchanged attacks targeting infrastructure and military targets on Saturday as their battle over the Strait of Hormuz intensified.
The region has seen days of mutual attacks in a conflict that increasingly centers on control of the Strait. The breakdown of a temporary ceasefire leaves no clear end in sight to the war that the United States and Israel began more than four months ago.
US Central Command announced on Saturday morning that in the seventh consecutive night of attacks it had struck "surveillance sites, military logistical infrastructure, underground weapons depots and naval capabilities".
Kuwait on Saturday said it had intercepted Iranian missiles and drones over its skies, while Iraq said it had shot down a drone over the city of Irbil. Jordan's state-run Petra news agency reported that air defense systems had shot down Iranian missiles, while air raid sirens were heard in Bahrain, according to the government there.
US airstrikes carried out on Friday brought down a tower at Iran's Chabahar port on the Gulf of Oman, a key trade route for neighboring Afghanistan, the state news agency IRNA reported and the US military later confirmed.
On Friday, Qatar warned people to take shelter as a barrage of Iranian missiles targeted the country. People heard explosions as air defenses were activated to intercept the missiles.
Iranian officials say recent US strikes have killed dozens of people and wounded hundreds, with new casualties reported on Friday.
Before the war began, the US had been in talks with Iran over its nuclear program. US President Donald Trump now faces political pressure to end the war and avoid the protracted conflict in the Middle East that he campaigned against.
Iran kills two US soldiers in Jordan
Two American service members have been killed and one is reported missing following Iranian attacks in Jordan, the US military announced on Saturday.
"On July 17, two U.S. service members in Jordan were killed in action while U.S. Central Command and partner forces defended against Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks. In addition, one other service member is missing," the statement said.
Four others were injured but have been released from hospitals.
The military has announced that it will keep the identity secret until next of kin are notified.
According to reports, this is the first time that American soldiers have died from direct Iranian attacks.
So far, since the start of the war, 16 members of the American forces have died and 430 have been injured.
Iran suspends deal with US
Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister, Kazem Gharibabadi, said on Saturday that they have suspended commitments to the Memorandum of Understanding and accused the United States of violating the agreement reached between the two countries last month.
"Iran is not implementing its commitments in the deal because it is busy defending the country," Gharibabadi said in televised comments broadcast by Iran's semi-official Fars news agency.
Meanwhile, Iran's ambassador to Pakistan, Reza Amiri Moghadam, has accused the US of interpreting the Memorandum of Understanding unilaterally and contrary to its terms, gaining control over parts of the Strait of Hormuz to achieve what, according to him, they failed to achieve on the battlefield.
In a post on social media on Saturday, Moghadam said it was clear that the Iranian side would not accept such an arbitrary interpretation, which, according to him, blatantly violated the Memorandum of Understanding.
"Now, the US has launched a war in violation of the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding and the principles of international law, destroying infrastructure," the Iranian ambassador declared.
US President Donald Trump has previously stated that the memorandum is no longer in effect. However, he has left open the possibility of negotiations for a final agreement.
The Memorandum of Understanding between the US and Iran was signed on June 17, 2026, with the aim of ending the fighting and establishing a 60-day period of negotiations towards a final peace agreement.
The document envisaged a ceasefire, the beginning of the lifting of the US naval blockade, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz for the safe passage of commercial ships, as well as the holding of negotiations within 60 days on key issues, including Iran's nuclear program, sanctions relief, and a permanent agreement between the two countries.
But the memorandum fell apart after both sides launched attacks on each other days ago.
Iranian Guard warns US attacks will lead to full-scale offensive
Mohsen Rezaei, a senior official of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and military advisor to Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, warned the United States of a "full-scale offensive" if it continues with military strikes against Iran.
"If the US attacks continue for another two or three days, we will enter a phase of full-scale offensive operations," Rezaei said in an interview with Iran's state television (IRIB).
His comments come as the US concluded its seventh consecutive day of attacks on Iran and Iranian retaliation against the US's Arab allies.
"No political border will be safe against Iran's offensive forces," Rezaei added, stressing that the US should be required to pay financial compensation for what Iranian officials have characterized as attacks on civilian infrastructure, which the US has denied.
Rezaei's threats largely mirror those recently made by US President Donald Trump, who had declared the already fragile US-Iran ceasefire and memorandum of understanding "over," as the US launched new attacks on the country. Iran has retaliated by striking US bases inside the territory of several of its Arab allies, including Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain.
